Joseph Hamilton
HAMILTON, Joseph, AMIEAust (1883-1963)
Joseph Hamilton was born in New Zealand in 1883. He was the son of James Hamilton and Annie Hamilton.
By 1910 he was working in Western Australia. He married Kathleen Amy Steele in 1910 at Fremantle. They had five children, three boys and two girls. Their two daughters both died in childhood from infectious diseases. Joan Deborah Hamilton, died in May 1927, aged 15 years. Shielah Kathleen Hamilton died in August 1925, aged 6 years. The three sons were, Dallas Alistair Hamilton born 1916, Beverley Youle Hamilton born 1918 and Murray Trevor Hamilton born in 1922. The middle son, Beverley, died in the Second Word War.
Joseph worked for Elders, Shenton and Company as a mechanical engineer. The company was absorbed into Elder Smith in 1918 and Joseph moved to the Engineering Branch and by 1925 was Manager of the Steel Branch. On January 1, 1929, the Structural Engineering Company of Western Australia had commenced operating as a joint venture between Elders and BHP. Key staff came from the Steel Division in Elders including Joseph as Manager for the new entity.

Joseph held the position of Manager of Structural Engineering until his retirement on January 31, 1949. He was succeeded by Leslie Herlihy.
Joseph died on January 13, 1963, aged 79, being survived by his wife and their two sons, Dallas and Murray.
In 1919, Joseph had become a foundation Associate Member of the Institution of Engineers.
