WESTERN AUSTRALIAN DIVISION - HONORARY FELLOWS OF ENGINEERS AUSTRALIA
Honorary Fellows of The Institution of Engineers Australia have rendered conspicuous service to the profession of engineering, are eminent in engineering or an allied science, or a distinguished person whom the Board desires to honour, either for having rendered conspicuous service to the Australian people or in recognition of outstanding achievement.

| 2019 | Ian Boyd Maitland OAM | Ian Maitland has been a practising structural engineer for 50 years and is an acknowledged expert in the field of heritage engineering. The projects Mr Maitland has undertaken are enormously varied, including such icons as The Golden Pipeline pump-stations, Rottnest Island structures, timber bridges, cranes, buildings and ruins and the strengthening of Trinity Church. He is one of only five engineers in Australia with registration in Heritage and Conservation Engineering and has been honoured with a 2016 Medal of the Order of Australia for services to Cultural Heritage and Structural Engineering and the 2012 John Monash Medal, Engineers Australia’s highest honour to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to Engineering Heritage. | |
| 2019 | Donald Frederick Young | Don Young graduated with an honours degree in civil engineering from the University of Western Australia and was involved in the construction of many of Western Australia’s major resource and infrastructure projects. Mr Young was on the Board of the Water Authority of Western Australia, the Water Industry Restructure Implementation Group and was the inaugural Chair of the Construction Panel of Engineers Australia WA Division.He has been honoured with an Engineers Australia Medal for meritorious service, an Engineering Heritage Australia Merit Award and a WA Division Medal for significant work undertaken in support of Engineering Heritage WA. | |
| 2020 | Neville Joseph Power | Nev Power has enjoyed a distinguished career that has spanned the gamut. He started on “shop floor” as an apprentice diesel fitter before qualifying as a mechanical engineer and taking on a succession of increasingly senior roles in the resources sector, including as Chief Executive Officer of Fortescue Metals Group between 2011 and 2018, a period in which FMG’s production quadrupled. He currently Chairs Perth Airport, the Foundation for the WA Museum and the Royal Flying Doctor Service in WA. In addition, Nev was selected by Prime Minister Scott Morrison as Chairman of the National COVID-19 Coordination Commission. | |
| 2020 | Mark Felton Randolph | Over a 40-year academic career, Professor Mark Randolph FIEAust CPEng(Ret) has become the world’s most-cited geotechnical engineer, with over 17,000 citations. His work has been pivotal to enabling Australia’s major offshore gas and LNG projects. He was also founding co-Director of consulting company Advanced Geomechanics, later acquired by international company Fugro, where he continues to serve as a Technical Authority. He originally obtained his PhD from Cambridge, where he lectured in Engineering before joining the University of Western Australia and rapidly becoming a professor. He co-authored two books Piling Engineering, and Offshore Geotechnical Engineering, and developed software for practical application. | 2021 | Judith Gay Uren | Judith Uren runs her own practice, JGU Consulting. She is also Non-Executive Chair of the Board of Pritchard Francis and volunteers time to industry bodies in a number of capacities. Starting with AECOM, she worked on bridge, infrastructure and building projects in Australia, London and Hong Kong. Soon after starting her family, Judith worked for Main Roads as their first permanent part-time employee. She then joined BG&E becoming a Director leading projects in the transport, resource and oil and gas sectors. She recently retired from a Non-Executive Director position with Pilbara Ports Authority. | |
| 2022 | Prof | Hui Tong Chua | Professor Hui Tong Chua is a highly respected and innovative academic, whose work has great potential to benefit the industry and provide technological breakthroughs to battle climate change. He has published prolifically and holds numerous patents. Professor Chua has made a significant contribution as an educator, innovator and entrepreneur. He also supports young engineers and women engineers. |
| 2022 | Dr | Ernest Patrick Evans | Ernie Evans had an exemplary career, his numerous works are a legacy to his design expertise and leadership. His contribution, through lecturing and mentoring, inspired young engineers to become leaders. His knowledge of concrete enabled higher standards and levels of construction in Australia. Ernie is held in the highest esteem by all who know him and by many engineering leaders. |
| 2022 | Prof | Keith Douglas Hampson | Professor Keith Hampson’s leadership has resulted in national collaborative research projects that have increased industry skills. His projects have led to improved sustainability and productivity, reduced costs and increased safety. Keith is respected by leaders in the construction industry and academia. He has achieved global recognition for Australia’s research excellence in the construction sector. |
| 2023 | Dr | Geoffrey Neville Boughton | Dr Geoffrey Boughton AM, internationally recognised for his expertise in cyclone-resistant buildings and timber structures, has significantly contributed to improving standards in these fields with Standards Australia. His work encompasses consulting, training, and research, enhancing the safety of structures. Additionally, he is a notable volunteer contributor to Engineers Australia. A respected wind and timber engineer, Dr Broughton’s career is dedicated to strengthening building resilience against severe winds in Australia and the Pacific. His volunteer efforts with Australian Standards committees have been instrumental in maintaining community safety through building standards. His achievements are also featured in the Engineers Australia centenary book, Anything is Possible, highlighting his impact on the engineering community. |
